Node planner

Ideas as boxes and arrows. This is the node editor cptclvtch was building in HFSTS, finished from his design notes: goals and solutions for thinking through a problem, planner goals with time to complete, neurons with weighted connections, and comments.

The board

Drag the empty board to move around, and drag a box by its top bar. To connect two boxes, tap the circle on one box, then tap the other box. Tap the label on a connection to edit it. Your board is kept in this browser.

Tap a circle to start a connection.

Make a new kind of box

His “component designer”: name it, say which tool it belongs to, and list what it holds.

Save and load

Copy the board as text to keep it anywhere, or paste a saved board to open it.

What came from him

His graph code defined the shape of it all: a board is a list of boxes, each box has a position and a list of parts, and each part holds text, a whole number or a decimal number. His notes listed the first kinds of box: Goal and Solution for a design tool, a Planner goal with a time to complete, a Neuron with weighted connections for a neural network, and a Comment with a title and content.

His notes also said what he wanted next, in order: build a graph in code, save and load it, draw it, pan around, add and remove boxes, add and remove connections, then a tool for designing new kinds of box. He wanted connections to carry their own parts, and to filter what you see by which tool it belongs to. His code got as far as the first step and the start of drawing; the rest is built here from those notes. “His plan” loads that list as a board.
